Brewers Beat the Rays to Win Their First World Series

Brewers win first World Series

For the first time in their history, the Milwaukee Brewers are baseball's world champions. On Wednesday night, they beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5, taking the World Series by four games to one. Fans in Milwaukee have waited a long time for this.

The club began in 1969 as the Seattle Pilots, and moved to Milwaukee a year later. Its only other World Series came in 1982, and it ended in defeat in the seventh and final game.

How Game 5 unfolded

In Game 5, the pitching did most of the work. Starting pitcher Miziarowski kept the Rays from scoring for more than five innings until a cramp in his leg forced him to leave. Tampa Bay didn't get a run until the ninth.

Meanwhile, the Brewers slowly built a lead. Rookie Pratt, who is just 22, drove in two of their four runs, and catcher Contreras added another with a double. Contreras was later named the series' most valuable player.

A title won against the money

What makes the title remarkable is money. Milwaukee is the smallest market in Major League Baseball, and more than half of the league's teams spend more on players than the Brewers do. Even so, no team won more games this season.

It's the best feeling ever, said team captain Jelic. All of our fans are here.
