The Merchant's Parrot and the Storm That Never Was

The Merchant and the Parrot

Kareem was a merchant who loved his wife Layla more than anything. When he had to travel for business, he bought a clever green parrot at the market. This bird could repeat everything it saw.

Keep him in your room, Kareem told Layla. Take good care of him.

The Parrot Tells the Truth

When Kareem came home, the parrot told him everything. Layla had spent his money on silk dresses and invited friends to long, noisy dinners. Kareem was angry, and he shouted at his wife.

Layla soon learned who had told her secrets. She decided to punish the bird.

Layla's Storm Plan

The next time Kareem went away for a night, Layla made a plan. One servant turned a heavy stone mill under the cage. It rumbled like thunder. Another poured water over the cage, like rain. A third moved a mirror near a candle, so flashes of light filled the room like lightning.

The poor bird shook with fear all night.

In the morning, Kareem asked, what did you see? Oh, master, the parrot cried, the storm was terrible. Thunder, lightning, and rain all night long.

Kareem frowned. The sky had been clear. Liar, he shouted, and in his anger, he threw the bird to the floor. It never moved again.

Kareem's Regret

Later, a servant told him the truth. Kareem sat alone, full of regret. The parrot had never lied. Kareem had simply believed too quickly.
