The ship sinks, goal changes
Then came the turning point. The ice tightened its grip until it crushed the ship's timbers, and endurance sank. 28 men were left standing on the frozen sea with a few salvaged lifeboats and whatever else they could drag clear. From that moment, the expedition became a completely different thing. The crossing was over as an ambition. The only goal left was to bring everyone home alive.Escape to Elephant Island and rescue
They camped on the drifting ice for months, then took to the boats and reached Elephant Island, bleak, uninhabited and far from any shipping route. Shackleton and five companions then sailed one small boat, the James Caird, 800 miles across open ocean to South Georgia. From there, he arranged a rescue, and the men left behind came home without a single death.Legacy of a failed expedition
Not every part of the story ended so well. On the opposite side of the continent, the supporting Ross Sea Party managed to lay its supply depots, but three of its members died. So the expedition failed and became famous anyway. Shackleton is remembered not for the journey he planned, but for the one he improvised. In 2022 the wreck of Endurance was found on the seafloor, remarkably preserved.
