The Truman Show: A Man Whose Whole Life Is Broadcast

Burbank's seemingly ordinary island life

Burbank sells insurance in a small town on an island. He is married, friendly with his neighbors, and in his whole life, he has never once left Seahaven. Every morning, the sun comes up on time, the same faces wave from the same doorways, and nothing ever goes wrong. Burbank believes this is simply his life.

In fact, Seahaven is not a town at all. It is an enormous television studio. and he is the star of a program that has broadcast his days and nights since the moment he was born.

Everyone around him is an actor. His wife, his best friend, his mother. The show's creator controls the sunrise, the rain, and even Burbank's fears. Years earlier, he staged the drowning of Burbank's father, so the boy would grow up terrified of water and never try to leave the island.

The illusion begins to crack

As the program nears its 30th year, the illusion begins to crack. A stage light falls from a clear sky, a patch of rain follows Burbank and nobody else. A radio describes his movements as he drives. Then his drowned father appears in the street, and is hurried away by strangers.

Burbank starts testing the people he trusts, and one night, he simply disappears. The cameras search the town, and finally find him far out at sea. While above him, the creator builds a storm to turn the little boat back.
